Wine flight tasting sheet

Side by Side
Side by Side: Two to four wines on one page, and what tells them apart.

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter

Side by Side puts a whole flight on one portrait page, a column per wine headed by its numbered ring and colour, and its name when the tasting is open. Down the left run the compact scales, the same for every column so the differences jump out: colour depth, smell strength, sweetness, mouth-watering, mouth-drying, weight and how long it lasts, each with three words to circle. Under them is a Rank box per wine, and across the foot a single space, The difference, in my words, for the sentence that sums up the flight. The page holds two to four wines, and a bigger flight splits evenly over more pages. It suits anyone learning by comparison, alone or with a friend, and themes such as one grape from three countries, a young and an older vintage, or a cheap and a dear version of the same style.

Line the glasses up on a white surface in the order of the columns and pour them all before you start, so you can go back and forth. Fill each row across the flight rather than one wine at a time, since comparing a line of colour depths is easier than remembering one. Rank last, once every row is filled, then write the difference while it is fresh. You can taste the flight open, or ask someone to pour it blind and check your notes against the labels afterwards. Print one page per flight, per person. The how-to page comes with it and explains colour depth, mouth-watering, mouth-drying and weight in a sentence each. Four small pours add up quickly, so spit as you go and keep water beside the row of glasses.

Questions

What is a wine flight?

A small set of wines, usually two to four, tasted side by side so you can compare them directly. A flight has a theme: one grape from several places, several vintages, or the same wine with and without oak.

How much wine is in a flight?

A taste of each, about 4 to 6 cl, so a flight of four is roughly one glass in total. Pour them at the same time into separate glasses and taste across the row.
