Beginner wine tasting sheet

First Steps
First Steps: Look, smell, taste, and did you like it, and why.

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter

First Steps is the gentle page for someone who has never filled in a tasting sheet. At the top is the glass number and a single reassuring line: circle what fits, there are no wrong answers. Then three prompts follow, each with a hint: Look (hold it over a white sheet), Smell (swirl, then sniff) and Taste (a small sip, round the mouth), each with a few plain words to circle. The page ends with Liked it?, three faces to choose from, and a line for Why. It uses about a third of the ink of the full notes page, so it never looks like an exam. It suits someone tasting on their own for the first time, a couple trying a few bottles from a shop, or a friend who insists they know nothing about wine. One page per wine, red, white, rosé, sparkling or sweet.

Pour a small taste of one wine, read the three prompts in order and circle as you go, without worrying about the right word. The how-to page comes with it: how to use the sheet in five steps, the scales in a sentence each, and a filled-in example, useful to glance at once. If you have two or three bottles open, do one page each and compare the Why lines afterwards, which is where you notice what you like. Print one page per wine, and a few spares. When the short page starts to feel too short, the full notes page is the next step, with the same order and more words. Taste and spit if you try several wines, and keep a glass of water next to the wine.

Questions

How do beginners taste wine?

Look at the colour over something white, swirl and smell twice, then take a small sip and move it round your mouth. Ask yourself whether you liked it and why, and write one word down.

Do I need to know wine terms to use a tasting sheet?

No. The beginner sheet prints a few plain words under each step to circle, such as fruity, fresh or dry, so you only choose what fits.
