Wine aroma training sheet

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter
Nose Training turns a kitchen cupboard into a smelling test. The sheet, headed What's in the jars?, has numbered sample boxes, and beside each a line for My guess, Its family to circle from fruit, flowers and herbs, spice and wood, and earth and more, and a Right box to tick at the end. At the foot is your score, Correct out of however many jars you set. Two companions come with it: a page of numbered jar labels to cut out and stick on, and the answer key, which lists what you put in each jar and stays hidden until the end. It suits someone learning to taste on their own, a couple turning it into a game, or a study group preparing for a blind tasting. Set six to twelve jars, and the sheet, labels and key follow the count.
Have someone else fill the jars, so you cannot remember the order, and write what is in each on the answer key, or choose the scents in the setup and the key prints them. Cover the jars or use opaque cups so colour gives nothing away. Smell each one briefly, write your guess and choose the family, and move on without lingering. A family right with the name wrong is still progress. At the end, check against the key, tick what you got right and write your score. Print one sheet per person, the labels once and the key once. Repeat a week later with the jars in a new order. The drill uses no wine at all, which makes it a good evening for an alcohol-free week, and Palate Gym is its partner for the mouth.
Questions
How do you train your nose for wine?
Smell real things blind and name them. Fill small jars with fruit, spices and herbs from the kitchen, number them, and guess each one without looking, then check. A few sessions make the names come faster in a glass.
What should I put in the jars?
Things a taster finds in wine: lemon peel, a slice of apple, a crushed blackberry, black pepper, clove, vanilla, fresh mint, a little coffee. Six to twelve jars is a good session, mixed across the families.
