Blind wine tasting competition for teams

Veritas
Veritas: Teams name grape, country and region, with a second guess for half points.

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter

Each team gets a Veritas sheet with a row per wine and three things to name: Grape, Country and Region. Every row has two lines, 1st and 2nd, and a Points box, and the scoring is printed on the sheet so nobody argues later: a first guess is worth grape 2, country 1, region 1, and a second guess grape 1, country half, region half. A team can stop at a confident first answer or hedge with a second. You keep the key and tally sheet, which holds the grape, country and region of every wine as you typed them, a column per team and The winning team at the foot. The contest is always blind and suits a wine club, a society training for a competition, or a group of friends who already know a few grapes. It takes four to twelve wines and up to eight teams.

Pour each wine blind, give the teams four or five minutes, and ask for both guesses in writing before anyone speaks. Say "Veritas" and turn that wine's reveal card, and each team marks its own points while you check the tally. The scores stay close for a long time, so the last two wines often decide it. Print one Veritas sheet per team, the key and tally sheet, the bottle tags and the reveal cards, and the rules page to read before the first pour. Eight wines take about two hours. Choose wines that are typical of their grape and place, since a clear example teaches more than a curiosity. Teams taste a lot in two hours, so set a spittoon and water on every team's table and pour small.

Questions

How do you score a blind wine tasting competition?

Give points for each part of the answer. A first guess earns 2 for the grape and 1 each for the country and the region, a second guess half that, and the team with the most points across all the wines wins.

How many people should be on each team?

Two to four. Pairs argue less and decide faster, fours bring more noses to each glass. Up to eight teams fit on the key and tally sheet.
