Numbered wine bottle tags

Bottle tags
Bottle tags: Numbers to tape to the bottles.

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter

The bottle tags are a portrait page of small cards, each 60 by 40 mm, with grey cut lines around them and a large numbered ring in the middle, the same ring that heads each glass on the guests' sheets. You get as many tags as you have wines, numbered from 1, and the first one carries a reminder: tape to the bottle or the bag. The blank version prints twelve, for when you just need numbers now. They come with every blind evening, and with them the reveal cards: one folded card per wine with the glass number on the outside and, inside, the wine and its price, laid face down by each bottle and turned at the end. Tags suit any blind tasting, from three bottles at a kitchen table to twelve in a club, and they work the same with every game.

Print the tags first, before you open anything, and cut them apart along the grey lines. Bag the bottles in another room, tape a tag to each and write the matching wine on the host sheet, so the numbers on the table and the answers in your pocket agree. A strip of masking tape holds better on foil than clear tape does. Then pour in number order, glass 1 first, and the guests' rings line up without anyone seeing a label. One sheet of tags covers up to twelve bottles, so a single print is usually enough. Set a spittoon and water beside the bottles, so tasters can taste and spit as they go. After the reveal, the tags can stay on the bottles for the photo.

Questions

How do you hide wine bottles for a blind tasting?

Slip each bottle into a paper bag, a sock or a sleeve of foil, and tape a numbered tag to the outside. Remove capsules that give the producer away, and pour out of sight if the bottle shapes are distinctive.

Why number the bottles instead of just pouring?

The number links the bottle to the glass, the guests' sheets and the host's answers. Without it, a blind tasting turns into a guess about which bottle was poured when.
