Birthday wine tasting

Verdetto
Verdetto: Stars, a word, a guess, and tonight's favourite.

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter

A birthday tasting runs on Verdetto, the guessing game: every guest gets a sheet where the glasses stand on numbered rings, and under each ring fills in My score as five small rings, a word, a guess at the wine and what they would pay, with two lines of notes. At the foot are My favourite tonight and The one I'd never buy. The host sheet keeps the answers and a scoreboard, and the keepsake is the page that suits a birthday best: the evening's name and the date as a headline, a podium for the top three wines, and room for everyone to sign. Choose the Birthday occasion and type the name of the evening, such as Mia turns 40, and it prints on every sheet. It works for two to twelve around the table, the birthday person included, and one to twelve wines.

The classic format is a bottle each: guests bring one in a bag, you tape on a numbered tag and write its owner on the host sheet. Pour glass by glass, let people argue, then go round the table reading scores before the reveal cards are turned. The person whose bottle wins gets the certificate, if you add it, and the keepsake goes round the table for signatures, then home with the birthday person. Print a guest sheet per person, the host sheet, the tags, the reveal cards and the keepsake. Six wines take about an hour and a half, which leaves the rest of the party for cake and talk. Put out water and food, and taste and spit, because the celebration goes on after the last glass.

Questions

How do you host a wine tasting for a birthday?

Ask each guest to bring a bottle in a bag, number them, and have everyone score and guess every glass. At the reveal the birthday person reads the answers and the table crowns a wine of the night.

What wines suit a birthday tasting?

Something with a story: wines from the birth year, from places the birthday person loves, or the same grape at different prices. Five or six bottles is plenty for a party.
