Best value wine tasting sheet

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter
Score and Value is the 20 Points grid made lighter. Each wine has its own column, headed by its glass number, name and the price you typed, printed small. Tasters give one Score out of 10 and then circle a Value from 1 to 5, with the key printed underneath: 1 not worth it, 3 fair for the money, 5 a bargain. There is room for notes, but nobody has to split a wine into look, nose and palate. The results sheet does the arithmetic with you: the average, the price, score per 100 spent, value votes and the rank, then Best value named under the grid. It suits a relaxed group, a long line-up, or a tasting built around price bands, such as three bottles under ten and three over twenty. One taster sheet holds up to six wines on a page, and a second page takes the rest.
Type the prices in before you print, as you would write them on a shelf label, so every sheet and the results agree. Pour the wines in order, give the room a few minutes each, and let people talk about whether the dearer bottle tastes dearer. At the end collect the scores, work out points per 100 on the results sheet and announce the best value as well as the best wine, which are rarely the same. Print one Score and Value sheet per taster, the results sheet, the tasting list and a glass mat for each place. It is a good format for a wine shop evening or a club deciding what to buy by the case. A 6 cl tasting pour gives a dozen tastes from each bottle, and a spittoon on each table keeps the scores honest.
Questions
How do you find the best value wine in a tasting?
Score each wine without thinking about price, then rate it for value once you see what it costs. Dividing the average score by the price shows which bottle gives the most pleasure for the money.
Should the prices be shown during the tasting?
For a value tasting, yes. The sheet prints each wine's price so tasters can judge whether it earns it. If you want a pure score first, pour blind and reveal the prices on the results sheet.
