A wine tasting score sheet out of 20
For a tasting you lead, at a club, a society or an evening with colleagues, a score sheet gives everyone the same scale and you a result at the end. This one is out of 20, the scale most clubs use, and it carries your wine list so nobody copies names from a screen.
The taster sheet sets the wines side by side, up to six on a landscape page. Each column is headed by the glass number, the wine's name and its price. First comes the gut feeling, five faces, and a star for the favourite, because the first impression is worth keeping apart from the numbers. Then three scales to circle: colour depth, smell and mouth-drying, and a box for notes. Last, the score: look out of 3, nose out of 7, palate out of 10, and the total out of 20 in a shaded row.
Type or paste your list once when you make the sheets: a wine per line, a price after a comma. The glass mats put every glass on its number, the tasting list gives you the line-up with room for your notes, and the results sheet has a row per taster. It averages the totals, counts the favourite votes, prints the prices and, with them, points per 100, then names the wine of the evening, the best value and the most divisive.
Pour 3 to 5 cl a glass for a long flight and keep water and spittoons on every table. Print on A4 or Letter at home, or on A3 at a print shop, where six glasses fit one mat. Everything is free and in black and white.
20 Points is chosen for this evening; you can swap it on the next screen.
Questions
How does the 20 point scale work?
Look is out of 3, nose out of 7 and palate out of 10, added to a total out of 20. The key under the grid reads 18 to 20 as outstanding, 15 to 17 excellent, 12 to 14 good, 9 to 11 fair and under 9 plain.
How do I add up the scores?
Each taster writes their totals on the results sheet, one row each. Average each column, count the favourite votes, and the rank follows. With prices typed, the sheet also gives points per 100.
Can I use it for a blind tasting?
Yes. Answer No, blind when asked whether they will see the names: the sheets carry numbers only, and the results sheet has a row for what each wine was.
