Team building wine tasting

Make the sheets View: A4 · Letter
For a team event the blind contest works better than individual scoring, because the decisions happen inside each team. Every team gets one Veritas sheet with a row per wine and three answers to write: Grape, Country and Region, a first guess and an optional second, with the points printed beside them. A bold first guess scores double, a safer second earns half, so a team has to agree how sure it is, which is where the conversation starts. You keep the key and tally sheet, typed with the right answers, and the rules page explains it all in a minute. Up to eight teams fit, so thirty colleagues make eight teams of three or four. It suits an offsite, an end of quarter evening or a client event, and four to twelve wines.
Mix the teams across departments, so the finance team is not playing against marketing, and give each a table with its own glasses, water and a spittoon. Pour one wine at a time blind and allow about five minutes per wine, then say "Veritas", turn that wine's reveal card and let teams mark their points. Keep the tally in view, on a flip chart if you have one, because a close race keeps everyone engaged. Print one Veritas sheet per team, the key and tally sheet, the tags, the reveal cards and a copy of the rules for each table. Six wines are enough for a work event, about ninety minutes. Make it clear from the start that tasters spit, offer soft drinks and food, and the evening stays a team exercise rather than a drinking one.
Questions
Is a wine tasting a good team building activity?
It can be, as long as it is about tasting rather than drinking. A blind contest gives teams something to discuss and decide together, and it rewards listening as much as knowledge.
What if some colleagues do not drink alcohol?
Give them a role that needs no wine: the team's writer, the timekeeper, or the one who smells and describes while the others taste. Spitting is normal at any tasting, and nobody has to swallow.
